This is my first review on this site, having been prompted to do so by the recent acquisition of this disc. Here the widely acclaimed young violinist Julia Fischer is joined by two other young colleagues, Daniel Muller-Schott and Jonathan Gilad, in the two Mendelssohn piano trios. Of course, these works have been played and recorded in the past by many great trios, but I am hard pressed to imagine more convincing and beautifully recorded performances than those offered by the present group. Like any great performances, these make me feel like I'm hearing the pieces for the first time. Dynamic shadings, phrasing, and tempos are perfectly judged throughout, at least by my taste. As wonderful as the Trio No. 1 in D minor is played, the second trio in C minor (which is arguably the more mature work) is even finer. For example, the opening theme of the first movement has an almost menacing quality that is powerfully conveyed by the musicians. In the second movement Andante, the expressiveness and poignancy of the playing is enough to bring tears to my eyes. The Scherzo is propulsive, with plenty of rhythmic drive. And the final Allegro pulls the whole piece together and brings it to a rousing conclusion. Needless to say, the sound is equally wonderful, with Pentatone's recording allowing all of the musicians to shine. If you are a lover of great chamber music and especially this repertoire, don't hesitate to get this disc. You won't be disappointed.

Performance: 5 stars
Sound (S): 5 stars

Perhaps you might actually add this post as a review?

Has anyone else heard this? I recommend it very highly. Superb recording and performance. It is startling how well these "soloists" have dovetailed into each other like seasoned chamber musicians! I had sort of expected Fischer to dominate the show. Well she obviously has too much intelligence and respect for the music, and for her colleaques, to pull a stunt like that.

IF you think that only established groups have any chance of playing chamber music properly, you really need to hear this one.

As we have come to expect from PentaTone, this is a really wonderful recording of the sounds these truly exceptional musicians made. It is gorgeous music making captured by a gorgeous recording. As Groot Geluid said in an earlier posting on another thread, this recording is spectacular.

I can't thank PentaTone enough for this production!

I cannot agree more heartily. I don't know if there is a better chamber music recording in the catalog.

it sounds like this simply must be purchased.

the dream now would be for the same team to do the two schubert trios.

i wonder whether pentatone might consider this at some point in the future?

You folks may recall that I posted a link several weeks ago to a chamber music festival in Jerusalem which has Julia, Jonathan and the cellist Danulo Ishizaka playing the Schubert E flat piano trio

It may still be available: http://www.jcmf.org.il/EN/video.asp

That notwithstanding, I (of course) hope so too!

The Storioni aren't bad but those other three - wow! Still the disc will be welcome.

it certainly will be, especially as, as far as i can see, it will be the first multichannel SACD of these works. the praga/guarnieri SACD is stereo only.
