Doubtful. Oppo has been pretty clear that they are waiting for a 4K Blu Ray standard before releasing new disc players.

I think 4K will be a flop just like 3D

I think you have no idea what you're talking about.

4K Blu-ray could be like SACD. A flop or a viable niche, it depends on the point of view. Just like SACD didn't replace CD, I don't think 4K Blu-ray will replace 2K Blu-ray as a mainstream medium.

Looking at the disk displays in the local shops it looks like the mainstream medium is still the DVD… Smaller numbers of Blu-Rays on separate stands.

At least in these parts of the world.

Not surprising. Peruse this thread and you'll see why:

WRT BD, I've kept my collection small over the past 5 years. It's limited to quality films with superior screenplay, PQ and high re-watch value:

... quite lean and mean and not a bit of rubbish in the lot. : )

4K will be the norm eventually. However, streaming will be the source and software will be obsolete. I don't buy very many movie discs any more.

4K Blu Ray will succeed, all be it will be something mainly early adopters will buy into initially. There are already a healthy number of 4K TVs out there selling well, and just as 1080P became the normal standard over previous 720P TVs, 4K will do the same over 1080P.

I do agree however that this will perhaps be the final disc based mainstream video format. Downloads will become the norm as bandwidth improves, but at the moment the majority of internet providers still cannot supply enough bandwidth to compete with 4K blu ray in terms of absolute quality. Even now 1080P blu ray is vastly better than any current streaming service so we can assume that surpassing 4K blu ray is still a long way away.

Do consider we are seeing a small resurgence in vinyl sales. OK I'm not suggesting its selling better than any other music format, but the reality is people like to own and collect their music. Despite many saying there is no sound quality advantage above high bitrate MP3 for the majority, there is still a robust market for those who want better sound and video quality and are prepared to pay for it.

So when 8K video discs are eventually released....dont be too suprised! ; )

Watch it happen. I know I don't watch BR or DVDs much any more. Netflix and Amazon Prime are my main sources of HD viewing. And I'm not the only one.

I think High Dynamic Range (HDR) enhancements like Dolby Vision will bring more to the party than 4K alone. As for 4K Blu Ray discs, time will tell.

The Blu Ray and CD sections at the local Best Buy keep shrinking. So they better get the new 4K Blu Ray format going soon or it will be an Internet-only product.
