thanks for inquiring. That's a bummer of course, no Prussian qts. And I don't understand the reasoning that "they don't like to re-record music unless they feel that they have someting new or more to say". Why then do an elaborate Mozart cycle on tour, if not for feeling that one has something new to say?

Positive to read that there is more Brahms forthcoming from the Hagen: String qts, quintets and sextets please, any.

It's a major bummer!

Brahms on RBCD just doesn't get me all that excited, frankly speaking. Let's hope it's in some form of hirez.

And... about Mozart's quartets in hirez-surround, I guess I'll just have to wait for the Auryn Quartet to release them on TACET. Just to avoid confusion, I haven't heard any news about such a cycle. I am just dreaming out loud. Today I picked up their Brahms quartets on 5.1 DVDA. Love it!

Thank the stars for TACET!!!!!

Well, more Brahms on redbook is not what I need either. But I read that quote differently. If we parse it precisely, he talks about "real hi-res" and we could take this to mean "even better" than the hi-res recording techniques he used up until now, since he also says "I would love to re-record everything, including myrios' previous recordings." His previous recordings were most definitely hi-res/SACD, unless he refers to the very early recordings only, which were redbooks indeed.
At any rate, I can't imagine that after having released SACDs he now returns to strictly redbook. That doesn't make any sense, given all the investment he has done in the equipment (the engineering/production is done in-house, by himself).

I can't imagine them releasing in low Rez (RBCDs or downloads). But, I thought his answer was a bit confusing. If he only records in hirez, then why did he say "Unfortunately, this doesn't include modern recording techniques"? Does he only mean 'surround sound' techniques by that?

And "real" hirez could be referring to the Strads... meaning the violins would provide "even better" sound. And he wants to re-record everything using those violins. That's why I asked him to clarify that point. But...no reply.

Anyway, let's hope your reading of his comment is the correct one.

I also picked up the Auryn quartet's DVDA of Schubert's C major quintet. I'll give it a listen later tonight.

Do you have any of /search/Britten+emperor?

yeah, it was confusing. So let's hope they are SACDs.

Ah, Schubert's quintet, for SACD I only have the Tokyo Qt Schubert: String Quintet D.956 - Tokyo String Quartet, David Watkin, which required some getting used to (my references are Melos Qt/Rostropovich on vinyl and Orpheus Qt/Wispelwey on redbook). Unfortunately, I have no capability for DVD-A, but let me know how the Auryn are.

As to Britten: no, not yet, but will buy at some point. Are they good recordings?

Thanks for the information but frankly, that email read just like some news release he had readily available. It didn't answer any of my questions and left me more confused now, than ever.

I put no faith in it.

He was trying to put a positive spin on things...that's for sure. But I still appreciate such correspondence. Just wish he would have followed up a little more. Anyway, as always in the audio world, we'll just have to wait and listen.

I must admit that I haven't gotten to the Schubert yet. I've been too enamored with the Brahms quartets to move on just yet. So much is made of the shadow of Beethoven hanging over Brahms. But, it's wonderful how much of Schubert's romanticism that one can hear in the C minor & A minor. And Opus 67 shines with the grace of Haydn. No wonder Brahms thought it to be his best. But, they don't easily reveal their true glory, do they? However...the more I listen to these quartets over the years, the more I feel they are the equal of Brahms's other masterpieces of chamber music. If you're interested, I found a review on Audiophile Audition. The link for RBCD version at the bottom of the article is a bit more critical, but I am still impressed not only with the sound quality of the recording but also with the Auryns' beautiful performance.

As for getting used to a recording, it seems many here have issues with TACET's immersive surround sound, The usual complaint is that concert performances don't sound like this. Well, what can one say? Either you get what TACET is trying to do or not. For my part, I find their immersive sound to be simply brilliant and eye-opening... or should I say 'ear-opening'. ;-)
It is curious just how stubborn listeners are about holding on to their fixed ideas on recorded music...holding on to what is comfortable to them. After all, most composers imagined their music in their own mind... in the abstract.

I don't have those recordings of Britten's quartets yet, either. They've gotten positive reviews here. Actually, I had to choose between them and the TACETs. Since I rarely come across TACET recordings in shops here, I snatched them up. I also look forward to the Britten (and Stenhammar).

Hi Lute, I p[osted about a month ago that Tacet had definite plans to record the Mozart quartets with the Auryn, after the forthcoming quintets. So, you'll get your wish in 2015/16.

Thank you so much, Paul!

I thought we had been discussing this somewhere on here. Last week I went back and searched for that thread, but couldn't find it. Now it's coming back to me...

Excellent news... AGAIN!
