Gonna grab this one... ordering it through CD japan for the best price! I think this could be the Dan's very best album! It won't hurt that it is an SHM SACD as well!

Looking forward to it myself even if it results in a double buy with an AF surround mix!!!

+1

Hoping that AF does release the QUAD versions of Countdown and Can't Buy a Thrill as I did submit these titles to AF CEO Marshall Blonstein for possible release on SACD.

Thanks to analogue for his thorough review.

Any suggestion out there that Katy Lied is on the list for the SHM-SACD treatment? As I recall, this is a sonically rather problematic album, in terms of extant tape sources, etc.

Hi guys.

Steeytom.

Universal Japans intentions would be to release the popular discography of any popular band. They have done this many times thus far. Think Stones and Dire Straits.
I would suspect that they would continue with the 70;s output of Steely Dan's music. There was a cancellation several years ago of a Dan shm sacd that irked fans. Then several years later they came back yet again with more Steely Dan products.

The really difficult thing is that its dreadfully hard to find REAL information on matters of tape sources and tape availability. Its getting so that everyone has an opinion.

I know for a fact that Universal Japan has a vast library of tape copies from original masters. They have been stored in their facilities for decades. These tapes could be used and they would sound great. However they might want to go with original master tapes and they would look elsewhere for these.

Katylied is troublesome. When I listen to it on cd I can tell its not quite up to the usual standards set by the other Dan cds in the remastered series.

I believe that this album will be released along with the other popular Steely Dan albums. I also believe they will return with their Black Sabbath series as well.

As I said......Universal Japan knows what the fans want. They strive to release a complete series of famous bands because that's what we want. They do monitor the web and read reviews and forums. Make no mistake about that.

Take it easy, No worries.

Thanks, analogue! That sounds very encouraging. I hope we do get a complete Dan series from our Japanese friends…. As for the latter, where would we (in North America, anyway) be without them?

Amen to that. But why do things apparently go out of print if there's a demand for them? Aja, for instance, seems only available now at ridiculously inflated prices.

what you talking about? The Katy Lied remaster sounds pretty decent on my system. It was advertised as a high fidelity recording (see also the booklet accompanying the '99 remaster). Perhaps not as good sounding as Aja, but then again Steely Dan: Aja doesn't sound as good as one should be able to expect from SACD, and at best only marginally better than the RBCD remaster (in fact, I have a slight preference for the latter). If you want stellar Aja, you should listen to the Cisco vinyl full analogue remaster (from the actual original tapes, in contrast to the Japanese SACD) on some high end turntable.

UPDATE:
some more info on the original problems with Katy Lied (which I presume have been solved, more or less, with the digital remaster, which to my ears sounds good):

all these SHM-SACDs are limited release, i.e. won't be repressed after the initial pressing has sold out.

My question is why do they not print more, if demand is there, and they've gone to all that trouble remastering in the first place?
