Does anyone know if this is recorded in anything higher-rez than 16/44.1 PCM?

I wonder where he got that info--16/44 seems to be their default. A few SACDs on the Philips label are pure DSD, though.

The original PCM resolution is marked on the disc inlay or booklet.

Universal Classics released just a few SACDs with 16bit PCM sound, early 1990's recordings remixed in multichannel. The others are 24bit.

The Mutter recording is from 1998, so 24bit is very likely. Other DG recordings from 1993 and 1994 (Mahler 5/Abbado, Holst/Gardiner) are 24/44 already.

Ah, so it does. To my ears, the 44khz sampling rate affects sound quality more than the bit rate.

24/44. But the sound is very, very good. And I happen to love the playing as well. This one, as well as Carmen Fantasie - Anne-Sophie Mutter
sound much better in SACD as they did in RBCD. I really do not know the reason, as the sampling rate is in both cases 44. But the SACD layer sounds amazingly natural and spacious if you compare it with the RBCD.

These were recorded in August 1998. The booklet clearly states that the sacd layer is 24/44.1, which was about as good as it got in 1998. This was one of DGG's early sacd releases.

Do they still use 24/44 or did they revert back to 16/44? I recently bought three RBCDs featuring pianist Helene Grimaud, and they all sound quite decent.

The booklets for essentially all Universal Classics SACDs are really good about being honest re: source bit rate. The booklet for this release says that the SACD layer is sourced from 24/44.1 stereo and surround masters. The CD layer is obviously in 16/44.1, and the booklet makes this explicit as well. There is no reason I'm aware of to doubt this information. And I'm honestly not aware of 16-bit sources for domestic Universal Classics SACDs with two exceptions - Messiaen: Turangalîla Symphony - Chailly (16/48) and Bernstein: West Side Story - Bernstein (16/50). There may be more on the Japanese market.

I guess the Eloquence SACDs are also from a 16/44.1 source, but those are an exception in so many ways: /alltitles/366

And I'm pretty sure they record in 24/96 now. There's a number of Grimaud releases on HDTracks in 24/96, and Credo - Hélène Grimaud is a 24/96 recording.

Couldn't HD just raise the resolution or do they work from masters?
