Since this was recorded in the 80s, and unless it was a quad recording, I'm guessing it's a synthesized surround effect. Does anyone know how they accomplish the effect?

As I post this, I am listening to Jordi Savall's wonderful Henry Purcell: Fantasias for the Viols 1680 in glorious multichannel.

Fugue, why would you assume that an 80's vintage album was recorded in two channel since multitrack recordings have been around since the 60's?

Perhaps a visit to their website might shed some light on the origin of the recording..........BTW, thanks for your recommendation of the Peter Toth: Liszt Late Piano Works......A fantastic recording (DSD~recorded/Mch/Stockfisch Records).

I'm glad you like it--it's one of my favorite recent acquisitions. In fact, I plan to listen to it as soon as I finish responding!

Anyway, a few of Savall's re-issued recordings were originally stereo, and after praising one on this forum (I think it was this one...), someone wrote, "You do realize that the surround channels are synthesized, don't you?" Ever since, I've been a bit curious/suspicious of them!

While its stereo origins are quite possible, I'd be a bit skeptical. Praga has been releasing some stereo reissues from the late 50's and 60's on their label culled from Stereo Open Reel tapes and Live Broadcasts but they indicate that clearly on their SACD reissues (and some of them sound spectacular) so I would expect Alia Vox to do the same if the surround channels were synthesized. I would definitely visit their website for further clarification.

If you visit the Amazon.it website, under description: (paraphrased) This 1987 essential recording for the first time is available in a VIVID multichannel recording.......hyperbole or fact?

I've just acquired and listened to this recording. It's wonderful music and one of the nicest of the Jordi Savall Heritage recordings to come along, and I have most of them.
