I'm not sure who would really want to buy this disc. Lots of nice incidental pieces of music played nicely all akin to candy floss; light, sweet, powder puff sort of music that demands little of the listener. OK in parts but not all at once.

I guess his mother liked it.

As I've written several times before, this stuff drives me nuts. We get these pieces, von Suppe, and Berlioz overtures on sacd and Chandos' new recording of the Britten piano and violin concertos is rbcd only. Who the hell makes these decisions in Colchester and why do they think that sacd purchasers are light music listeners? I'm happy to have the Atterburg and Raff discs (although more than half of the latter was made up of overtures), but why can't we have the important recordings on sacd as well?

It's a good question, but the most likely answer is that producers have judged the lighter fare will sell more copies.

This is a very enjoyable disc. So, ok, Chandos does not please everyone with what they use their multi channel resources on and I agree it is a shame they don't use mch across the board. I for one like to listen to some 'lighter' classics from time to time. This is more Chabrier than I have ever heard and I am pleased to add it to my collection.
There is, however, an interesting note on the recording in the booklet. The production is a joint effort. The producer and engineer are from Chandos (messrs Pidgeon and Couzens as per usual) with equipment and technical support from Swiss Radio and Merging Technologies. The latter claim this to have been a 'world first' from the team. Let me quote from the booklet:- " The OSR approached us in May 2012 with a request to provide them with a system capable of high resolution 24bit/96khz multi-channel recording, and we felt that could be an extraordinary opportunity to deploy a brand new equipment range called RAVENNA. The Horus Networked Audio Interface allows audio to be distributed across standard networking technology while retaining the highest of fidelity.....Combining the Horus unit with our Pyramix Masscore Digital Audio Workstation then provided Chandos with the ability to mix while the recording was taking place."
The encouraging thing there is that the Orchestra see the need for high resolution and multichannel recordings.
The resulting sound captures the open if fairly resonant acoustic of the Victoria Hall, Geneva. Good to hear the OSR in excellent form in good modern recordings. I would have been interested to compare the results here with the Pentatone efforts with this orchestra (presumably in the same venue). Maybe someone else will be able to do that.
