This CD is problematic. Strictly speaking, it is as described, but only if you read the "fine print" (not that details are actually given!). This is magnificent. Everything in the main detailed review is true, but mostly the main characters now sound believable in a non-operatic way (which tarnished Bernstein's own 1984 version). It would be easy to go too far the other way and have the main characters sound like Musical Theater belters, ... more |

I just bought this the other day after resisting for a while. I have 1,3,4,5,7 and 9 in Nott's series, and I think it is a truly wonderful achievement overall. I personally think 7 and 9 are the best performances I have heard.

Wow! I had been tentative about buying this disc, as the pieces I knew well (Finzi and Mussorgsky) I would normally prefer with a man singing, but I decided to give it a go. Again: wow!

There is some very nice stuff here, and the playing, in particular, is excellent. The music itself contains some very fine and virtually unknown Handel.
