I put this record on with a certain amount of trepidation in view of the harsh string tone in some (but not all) of this RPO/Membran series. These are likeable performances. I thought the big band sound might have come from being recorded in a church. Unfortunately the string sound is harsh and steely and although I have tried to like the performances there is no getting past the sound of the strings. A pity because the Bizet/Grieg disc ... more |

The great Sir Alexander recorded this in 1995 the year of his death and yet the performances have the verve and enthusiasm of a young man in his prime. The brass of the RPO roar out with an excellent rasp and the strings respond with a silky athleticism. 4.5 stars from me for an excellent digital ... more |

Excellent recording of the piano, beautifully clear and with excellent presence. I have very much enjoyed these performances - the RPO on very good form in support. |

Have been listening to this all weekend and enjoying it greatly for both the performances and the very good surround sound - a thoroughly enjoyable release. Perhaps not the latest and greatest sound but still very clear and quite refined digital so 4.5 rather than 5 stars from me for the ... more |
