Marvin Gaye: The Marvin Gaye Collection        (8 of 8 found this review helpful)
  April 9, 2006

Well, I feel odd having to give this disc a performance rating. These are legendary songs and performances, so while maybe a given song could have been performed better, these are pretty definitve. The song selection is good, although I feel the disc is a little short. The main reason I'm reviewing ... more
Mozart: Salzburg Sacred Music - Neumann        (4 of 4 found this review helpful)

First off, a stipulation: My star rating for the peformance is very much a guess. While I have heard the Missa Solemnis performed live by a mediocre ensemble, I have not heard the Vesperae solnnes de confessore before. I am, however, very familiar with the Requiem and C minor mass, a few other vocal ... more
Duran Duran: Astronaut        (2 of 3 found this review helpful)

I'm afaid I don't have much to add to the previous reviewer. The performance and songs on this album are surprisingly good considering the band hasn't been fully together for years. Some of their 80s flair and energy is back, especially in catchy up-tempo songs like Want You More or Nice. In classic ... more
Bach: Mass in B minor - Müller-Brühl        (9 of 9 found this review helpful)
  June 12, 2005

This new B-minor mass has a lot to offer, and comes up just shy of being a perfectly satisfying experience. Performance: Generally excellent. The conductor does an excellent job of keeping the pace right, and it’s obvious that the orchestra, choir, and conductor are in good communication ... more
Lauridsen: Lux aeterna - Layton          (9 of 9 found this review helpful)

I've been in choirs and choruses for years, and I happen to have sung this work in my college choir, with organ accompaniment rather than orchestra. That being said, I know this piece inside and out. The performance here by Polyphony is truly top-notch. The liquid-like diction in the opening ... more

Discussion: Ravel: Daphnis et Chloé - Haitink
June 26, 2009
Indeed! I just switched the channels and it's a big improvement. Upon a cursory listen I didn't notice there was anything very (actually) wrong - I also listened at a high volume and simply thought the center channel was unusually prominent and the recording was a bit murky. Clearly I wasn't paying much attention and was wrong. My MoFi ... more
Discussion: Ravel: Daphnis et Chloé - Haitink

In response to the review posted yesterday, I have to say that I have indeed listened to this in surround and the imaging is fine. So there are copies in existence that have the correct channel assignments (as the other reviewers should be evidence of). However, in the BSO/Levine thread for Daphnis, Kal Rubinson mentions that he also got a copy of ... more
Toto IV SACD versions
March 29, 2009
The second link you posted, [t=1189] is actually single-layer Stereo/Multi-channel. That's the version I own, so while I obviously have no idea if the eBay disc is genuine, they DO exit. It came in an SACD sleeve yet still had the CD-DA logo on the cover, just like the version on this site. ... more

It's definitely there, I just need to bump it up a few dB before the hall sounds like it extends behind me ... more
2 new BSO/Levine SACDs coming

I find this interesting...I had a different impression. I last heard Levine and BSO perform Daphnis Suite 2 in March '07 and remember it quite vividly. The recording doesn't give quite as much of the impression of Symphony Hall as I hoped (the rear channels need some boost) and is more brittle than I expected. I think this is because of the odd ... more
