Name:
Feel free to call me Derek in the forums: it's my name :)
Details:
My mum gave birth to me in '73 and it's the '70s that matter most to me in terms of the music I like and enjoy most - even though I'd otherwise describe myself as a child of the '80s with the soundtrack to my youth sung by Duran Duran, Madonna, Prince, Simple Minds and so on.

I also have a penchant for classical music and my favourite pieces of classical music are Mahler's 2nd Symphony (Abaddo/Lucerne Festival Orchestra), Shostakovich's 5th, Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture, Holst's The Planets and Bach's Brandenburg Concertos.

My first SACD was Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds, a real tour de force in surround sound and if I had to pick my top 10 SACDs, I'd say:

Dire Straits - Dire Straits
Dire Straits - Brothers In Arms (5.1)
Donald Fagen - The Nightfly (5.1)
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon (5.1)
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here (5.1)
Steely Dan - Aja
Steely Dan - Gaucho (5.1)
10cc - The Original Soundtrack
Tomita - The Planets Ultimate Edition (4.0)
Jeff Wayne - War of the Worlds (5.1)

I've also collected a lot of DVD-A discs as well as a handful of Blu-ray discs and my top 10 of them combined is:

The Beatles - Love (5.1 DVD-A)
Beck - Sea Change (5.1 BDA)
Beyoncé - Beyoncé (5.1 BDV)
Bjork - Vespertine (5.1 DVD-A)
Donald Fagen - Morph The Cat (5.1 DVD-A)
Mahler - Symphonies 1-7 by Abaddo/ Lucerne Festival Orchestra (5.1 BDV)
Porcupine Tree - Lightbulb Sun (5.1 DVD-A)
R.E.M. Automatic For The People (5.1 DVD-A)
Talking Heads - Remain In Light (5.1 DVD-A)
Zofo - Zoforbit: The Planets (5.1 BDA)

And one more thing...I'm now content to say music matters more than format and if it's well produced, I'll happily consume it regardless of format.

Tomita: Planets (Ultimate Edition)        (6 of 6 found this review helpful)
  January 4, 2013

This hybrid SACD contains stereo and 4.0 multi-channel audio and I think it's fantastic! In essence, Tomita's The Planets is an electronic rendition of The Planets by Gustav Holst. The idea of messing with a classic like The Planets might offend some, but not me - I love it! His interpretation is ... more

This Left Feels Right is to Bon Jovi what MTV Unpugged is to Nirvana. TLFR demonstrates that Bon Jovi can perform without the need for full throttle on almost every other track. It's almost as if Bon Jovi were recording this album while trying not to wake a sleeping baby in an adjacent room. They've ... more

I've watched the first two episodes of The man in the high castle on Amazon prime and I'm not swayed by it so far - but it feels like some action and drama is just around the next corner, possibly in the next episode, so I'll keep on watching. If it had been an HBO production, I'm sure I would have been hooked by now, but as it is, I'm getting ... more
Multi-channel SACDs from Exton
November 26, 2015
There are times when the rears come slightly more to the fore, but even then, it still seems like they just replicate what comes from the front channels. I've heard some classical multichannel releases offer less from the rears, but regardless, rear channel output shouldn't be the main reason for purchase because if it is, you might well be ... more
