One of the best sounding SACDs available. It's amazing that an album this old can be so incredibly difficult to reproduce. Out of the five SACD players I own, only the best two can play this disc without screwing up the extremely challenging dynamics and high-frequency content here.
The stereo layer on here is way too bright, can't stand listening to it. I much prefer the MoFi CD to this SACD, as stereo versions go. Haven't listened to the multi-channel version enough to really rate its sonics, it didn't sound all that compelling either when I quickly browsed through it.
This SACD is a disappointing step backwards from the quality of the earlier Gabriel albums on SACD. The "Melting Face" SACD sounds immensely better than this one does. The opening three tracks to this album are among the best the Police ever recorded, even though some of the others are pretty bad. The regular CD release is terrible; hard to listen to because it's so harsh and distorted. The SACD is no classic, most of the problems are clearly from the master here. ... more
The thing to realize about this one is that the sound quality varies a lot from track to track. Some songs sound as dull/weird as they always have on CD.
