Brahms: Complete Symphonies - Macal        (8 of 10 found this review helpful)
  June 18, 2013

Brahms four symphonies are my favorite symphonies. I identify with them deeply. I feel that they speak to me. I feel the composer strongly when I listen to them. These four symphonies have been the source of so much joy in my life. I return to them again and again. I have lost count of the number ... more
Stéphane Denève conducts Debussy        (10 of 29 found this review helpful)

I received this disc (set) last week with a feeling of great anticipation, after reading many great reviews. My let down was immediate. I will use the "fish bowl" analogy. Just as a fish bowl distorts light in such a way that the fish inside it cannot be perceived as "free swimming" but are rather ... more
Schumann: Carnaval, Chopin - Slávka Pechocová          (3 of 3 found this review helpful)

A man of many hats (poet, philosopher, inventor, teacher, music critic, song composer, piano virtuoso, piano composer, conductor, orchestral composer…) Robert Schumann, in his role as music critic, writing in his music journal, the “Neue Zeitschrift fur Musik”, in an article published in May 1831, ... more
Beethoven, Schumann: Piano Concertos - Van Cliburn, Fritz Reiner        (12 of 14 found this review helpful)

I have been deeply impressed with everything that I have heard in the re-mastered Living Stereo SACD series and this recording featuring Van Cliburn performing the Schumann Piano Concerto as well as the Beethoven Emperor Concerto just continues in this tradition of excellence. There is something ... more
Beethoven & Mendelssohn: Violin Concertos - Heifetz/Munch        (5 of 8 found this review helpful)

I had not heard a Heifetz recording in over ten years. I don't remember being too impressed with his fiddle playing the first time I investigated his recordings and I must say that I was not impressed this time either. Heifetz has an awful tendency to rush through everything. He does not seem to ... more

Best SACD piano recordings
July 10, 2015
SACD has turned out to be a really fine medium for capturing piano recordings. When it first came out, I thought all the extra dynamic range and multi-channel capability would be wasted on piano recordings. This has not turned out to be the case. SACD brings a rich dimensionality and palpability to piano recordings that I have not heard from ... more

Is there any chance that any of the SACD titles that were previously released on EMI Classics (that have gone out of print) will be re-released by Warner Classics? Many of these titles were only available for a year or less before they went out of print (right around the time Warner took over EMI's Classical division). I am quite happy with ... more

Getting back to the original topic...it would be a shame if Audite stopped releasing SACDs, as they have produced many fine ones. I don't see myself switching to downloads any time soon. I still purchase discs. ... more
Discussion: Dvorak: Symphony No. 8, Janacek: Jenufa (suite) - Honeck

I listened to this disc last night and could not help but stand and applaud afterward. I sincerely hope that we get more recordings from this team soon...everything (on this disc) was played so passionately and recorded so realistically that I could feel the "wooosh" of the instrument's power in my face and body, the kind of air movement, ... more
