Mahler: Symphony No. 3 - Jansons        (4 of 5 found this review helpful)
  September 19, 2014

This will be brief and perhaps unusual, since I listened to only the last movement, one of my favorite in the Romantic-period repertoire. (I have loved Mahler's music for about 50 years and most of all the adagios and am quite happy listening to only the slow movements.) The orchestral playing and ... more
Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 6 - Monteux        (1 of 1 found this review helpful)

This is the second arrival of my recent order of lots of these Living Stereo SACDs. Monteaux's performance seems rather middle-of-the-road and not very emotional--almost casual--compared with newer slower, heart-on-sleeve performances which I love, but it's still a fine performance. The Boston ... more
Bartok: Concerto for Orchestra etc. - Reiner        (2 of 3 found this review helpful)

I've heard many of these Living Stereo SACDs years ago but bought a bunch the other day; this is the first to arrive. I feel that these three recordings sound excellent but are not the equal of the best modern DSD recordings in resolution--that sense of having nothing between you and the orchestra ... more
Music for Strings - RPO/Simonov        (3 of 5 found this review helpful)

I agree with Jonalogic's comments about the Tchaikovsky. The performance is excellent--strong, and I love the slower tempi Simonov uses. I enjoy this work, and this disc, purchased due to Jonalogic's comments, is now my favorite performance. The recording is VERY nice sounding for what I assume ... more
Brahms: Complete Symphonies - Macal        (7 of 17 found this review helpful)

Another expensive miss from Exton for me--and I too LOVE the symphonies of Johannes Brahms. Two-channel only? What a waste. I bought a couple expensive, highly rated Mahler symphonies on Exton, only to discover they were stereo-only; I gave them away. SACD's DSD recording format gets the ... more

Luukas: "We cannot wish (for?)...better performers for these works: the best orchestra of the world - London Symphony Orchestra...". Really? I've been listening to and paying attention to the sounds of the London orchestras on recordings for about 50 years. I believe that the LSO is a good to very-good orchestra, but it almost always sound thin to ... more
Discussion: Holst: The Planets - Boult

As I've written several times recently, this has been my favorite performance of 'The Planets' for decades. Available initially on LP ASD-3649 and with the same cover pic, I now have it on a couple EMI CDs, numbered CDM 7 64748 2 and 7243 5 67749 2 6, with the latter having the Enigma Variations first on the disc. I also wrote recently, here and ... more
