This is a perfect example of how the good soundtrack can end up being more successful than the film itself. What we have on disc is sometime slightly, sometimes significantly different from the actual movie music, and Gabriel did a great job to present this disc as a separate work of art. I wouldn’t necessarily compare this to other Gabriel’s work (his pop stuff that is) I see it as a great conceptual project, using ethno music as an inspiration and starting point to create something new, not just as an end to itself. It still sounds modern, it’s bold and it’s powerful.

I’m not a great fan of soundtracks. Film music has its own purpose, if removed from the actual context it can show all its weaknesses and IMO sounds unfinished. But Gabriel here didn’t take the easy route – he used the music composed for a film to create a self-sustaining musical composition. It’s a shame that nobody bothered to crate a surround mix out of it, especially knowing that the film mix IS in surround. With plethora of ambient noises and strange sounds, unusual instruments and fantastic percussions it could be mind-blowing.

It is still good, of course, and the sound is just slightly better than on already excellent redbook. Especially all the drums and percussions, more focused and firmer than before.
If you know Gabriel’s pop work, you’re up for a (pleasant) surprise, if you’re a movie-soundtrack fan, this is one of the most accomplished discs you’ll ever find.

In 1988, Peter Gabriel's compositions for 'The Last Temptation of Christ' were nothing short of groundbreaking. They still hold up quite well today, even though their world beat nature and heavy use of synthesizer date them slightly. Track #8, 'Zaar', is particularly enveloping, and begs for serious listening.

My only complaint with regards to the mastering of this disc is that at times its sound comes across as far too "digital." I'm not sure whether to blame this on the original mastering and Gabriel's heavy use of synth and drum machine, or on the subsequent remaster to SACD. Though the disc is compelling from start to finish, some may notice a certain "coldness" in its sound. Still, a great disc that demonstrates both the talents of Gabriel as composer and the merits of SACD as a format!

"We recorded some of the finest singers and soloists in the field of world music and set the score on a backdrop of traditional North African rhythmns and sounds. It was a wonderful experience working with (...) musicians (...) from Pakistan, Turkey, India, Ivory Coast, Bahrain, Egypt, New Guinea, Morocco, Senegal and Ghana." Peter Gabriel outlines his experience in making this record in the booklet and I included it here to give you a hint of what to expect when you decide to buy this record.

Perhaps you bought the soundtrack for the movie "The Gladiator". Well, some of the tracks have a similar feel (wonder whether Hans Zimmer listened to "Passion" first?). But the comparison is not entirely convincing because I think that Gabriel's effort here is much more refined and interesting because of this dizzying array of multi-cultural talent. The album contains haunting soundscapes, choirs that sing in ancient languages, pulsating rhythmns, delicate fills and an amazing amount of different and exotic instruments. Is this Peter Gabriel's best work, period? One could certainly argue it.

This is an album to 'immerse' yourself in for lack of a better word. It paints a picture and even it you have not seen the movie, that picture evokes images of different worlds, mysterious landscapes, drama and adventure. Expand your musical horizon and get this disc.
