This is the first Peter Gabriel album, made almost directly after his split from Genesis in 1976. It is also the first of the three PG SACD's that I bought - the other two are Passion and PG 3. The symphonic rock Genesis so clearly stood for is readily apparent on this album. This is BIG music. Big arrangements. Big tempo variances. But there is less of the long instrumental parts Genesis tended to mix into their albums.

'Down The Dolce Vita' has even a genuine Symphonic orchestra (the LSO) doing the intro, complete with brass. The most well known tune here is of course 'Solsbury Hill' which opens with some nice acoustic guitar and talks about why PG left Genesis - "So I went from day to day Tho' my life was in a rut". Another delicate intro can be heard on the balled 'The Flood', the last song on this album.

I have never had this on LP or CD so I cannot directly compare the sound quality. From my comparative SACD experience it sounds good, but not exceptional. There is not a lot of depth to this recording. But remember that these 70's rock recording were never of audiophile quality nor were they intended for such an audience. My two star rating is conservative, but I just don't feel it's worth a three star compared with other SACD's I rated 3 stars.

My prediction for those fairly unfamiliar with Gabriel but familiar with Genesis; this one will grow on you over time. It's still enough Genesis to sound familiar, but it's already apparent why PG would have the succesful and somewhat progressive (using world music themes and instruments) and modern sounding solo career ahead of him.

I am assuming that both of the previous reviews were by Peter Gabriel fans much younger than myself. I have lived with the many configurations of this classic PG album over the years. Some, rather, obvious factors to take into consideration when reviewing this album...
1) This was recorded in the mid 70s'. It was produced by Bob Ezrin and , mostly, recorded in Toronto with Peter's new "band" which comprised of Ezrin's studio cronies - Dick Wagner, Steve Hunter, Tony Levin, Jerry Marotta and, of course, Peter's new musical friend - Robert Fripp. This alone constitues a entirely different feel from what Genesis was about. There is a mildly remote post-Lamb feel to it, but that's it.
2) All said, comparing this album to anything Genesis, is virtually apples-to-oranges.
3) For a debut album, PG1 is by far a much more interesting listen than say, Phil Collins debut solo or Mike Rutherford's debut solo or - god forbid, Mike & The Mechanics debut album, and, lastly,
4) The original production by Bob Ezrin was very much a blueprint for "the Wall" in a lot of ways and a hyper extension of what Ezrin had done up to then. The original mix & production is somewhat subdued (much to the songs' feel), but the SACD Stereo mix is MUCH better than the original viny,l 8 track, cassette or CD version that I have owned at one point since its' initial release.
This album from beginning to end is a classic album from the 70s' and an album that holds high regards from Genesis fans from the early years.

My second Peter Gabriel SACD. (The first being 'UP') My first impression was rather disspointing. Both in performance and especially sound quality. After some time the music on the disc has grown on me a bit. Though it's still not what I was expecting (or hoping for) from Mr. Gabriel. As far as the sound quality...it's mediocre at best. And for the multi-channel fans out there - this disc is only two channel, sorry.
