I'm really happy I ran into this disc--I've been a fan of the Beethoven overtures for decades. I had a Szell/Cleveland LP on Epic with the 4 Fidelios;, it was, IIRC, a typical crappy-sounding Columbia/CBS multi-mono-miced edgy mess, but I loved the music!

I enjoy these discs more than Mr. Broggio does. I love the big orchestra and the abundant hall sound in the recording. There's much depth recorded, with the french horns--GLORIOUS in the Leonoras 2 and 3--sounding as if they're about 50 meters from the mics. The woodwinds are indeed a bit distant but quite audible, and that off-stage trumpet might be 150 meters from the mics...I LOVE it. The violins sound as if they're divided, and I like the sounds of that, too. Even with 'only' two front channels, there's plenty of center-channel fill for me, but maybe that's one reason Mr. Broggio feels the woodwinds are recessed.

Tempos are moderate--no quick-step, small-band Beethoven here--and Masur plays these works as if he loves them. Highly recommended for lovers of Beethoven's music.
