Performance:   Sonics:
Owning Zinman's recording of Mahler's first symphony with the Tonhalle Orchestra I acquired the Ninth on the reputation of this wonderful recording (and it's pretty amazing price). Listening to it today for the first time, I am a little bit disappointed as there are two major problems with this (at least for me. Somebody else might have a different opinion): while I don't have any problems with Zinman's interpretation of this challenging piece of music, I find the obvious technical difficulties the first violin has with some of the lyrical sections of the last movement rather distracting. The second piece of criticism is the recording, which seems strangely flat and lacking in definition specifically in the higher frequencies. I initially thought that I might have a problem with my speakers or amps, but playing some of my other sacds seems to put the blame on the recording.

Nevertheless, still a competent interpretation of a wonderful piece of music for an excellent price.
