Review by JJ October 18, 2008 (4 of 6 found this review helpful)
Performance:   Sonics:
It was in Evian, thirty years ago, on May 28, 1978 to be exact, that the Prazak Quartet surprised many by winning the first prize of the international competition. Today, the four musicians constitute one of the greatest chamber music groups in the world and their renown only increases along with their exemplary recordings. “The by-now old friends”, as Pierre-Emile Barbier states, “are but one sixteen-string instrument whose uncommon homogeneity, the fruit of instinct and maturity, can only be acquired over time and daily effort. Their interpretative involvement is their signature, going beyond confrontations and multiform vision.” And this is what we hear here, with the String Quartet in G minor Op. 50 N°6 “The Frog” by Joseph Haydn, the String Quartet N°3 by Bohuslav Martinu composed in 1929, the Quintet for Saxophone (Raaf Hekkema) and the String Quartet dating from 1999 by Jundrich Feld, the immense composer who died in 2007, as well as the String Quartet N°16 in F major Op. 135 by Beethoven. All of these works offer the perfect image of the eclecticism of a Prazak Quartet, which can find just the right expressiveness whether in Haydn and Beethoven or Feld or Martinu. This concert, recorded in stereo, is a real surprise not to be missed.
