Michel Camilo: Solo

Performance:   Sonics:
An interesting mix of latin and jazz, in that order.

Camilo is a master on the piano and Anthony Jackson
fantastic on the bass. Horacio Hernandez has got "4"
arms on drums and percussion.
So technically as masterful performance, but sitting
through the whole (SA) CD can be a little bit boring
as the tracks are a bit too similar.

Sonically the whole thing is a true Telarc marvel, but
in surround take care of placement of the speakers as the
drums and the piano moves from the front to the rear, and
from left to right, from track to track, so if your speakers
are not set up properly you may find it difficult to get
the 5.1 mix right - I am still struggling.

But clarity and fidelity are very high.

Performance:   Sonics:
"Piece Of Cake" has one of the best intro's in the business! It sets up this album very nicely. Michel Camilo is a pianist from the Dominican Republic. In 2001 he won the Grammy Award for Best Latin Jazz Record.

Years ago I have seen Camilo perform live and I have been a fan ever since. This is his latest album. It's not entirely an exercise in Latin-jazz. It's a little too smooth for that. It has that distinctly tropical feel to it and it's very melodic. And by the way, in this case "smooth' does not at all equate to boring, far from it. The uptempo numbers are in the majority but there are enough ballads to balance out the album. It's especially the ballads where Camilo shines in my view. You can hear his nice touch and his tasteful sense for harmonics. When a piano ballad holds your attention throughout there is something special going on. The electric bass and drums deserve mention here as well because as a unit this trio is right up there with the best of them. Its pure DSD origins mean that you are in for a sonic treat.
