Performance:   Sonics:
One of the best of the RPO series. Top notch performances. I prefer Schmidt in the symphony to Tjeknavorian or Svetlanov. Martinon may just have the edge but his recording is getting on a bit now. The Dances go well and "In the steppes of central Asia" has just the right balance of stillness and forward movement. The recording is well balanced and not as manipulated as some in this series.

Performance:   Sonics:
I recently received this (ordered because of the enthusiasm Jonty expressed in his review). Well the dynamics are great, and there is excellent clarity. But based on hearing it in stereo only - my multichannel system is temporarily down while I build an in-the-wall equipment cabinet, I find the string sound here harsh and difficult to tolerate!

I am listening via a Sony DVP 9000 ES which has proven to be an excellent 2 channel player. The amp is an Onyko stereo receiver of 100 watts / channel and the speakers are a pair of the forgiving Celestion SL6si. I will be interested to see how this sounds via my Sony XA 9000 ES and Bel Canto multi-channel preamp with the Apogee Duetta Signature and Magneplanar ribbon speakers. If a treble is sweet this set-up reproduces that, if it is hard or steely, well that is quite apparent as well. So for now 5 stars for performance but only one and a half for the hard steely treble in stereo.

Have been listening to this all weekend and enjoying it greatly for both the performances and the very good surround sound - a thoroughly enjoyable release. Perhaps not the latest and greatest sound but still very clear and quite refined digital so 4.5 rather than 5 stars from me for the multi-channel sound.
