BRAVO!!! DO NOT MISS THIS!!! Another winner by Pentatone and its artists! This is, by far, the best recreation of the works of Corelli since Chiara Bianchini and Ensemble 415, on Harmonia Mundi, readjusted everyone's ears upward in the playing of the Italian master's Op.6 Concerti Grossi, with an ensemble comparable in size to his, according to writings of his time. For many years, we have been accustomed to hearing small ensemble performances of this repertoire. That is, according to Corelli's contemporaries, not what the Italian master had in his hands as his orchestra.

Yes, even though there are period instrument performers, they have even gone the extra distance of adding a very diverse and LARGE group of continuo players to the large string ensemble for these works, and what an amazing group they are. These continuo players attack this music like the central part of the ensemble, which, according to the treatises on Baroque euphony, is EXACTLY what is supposed to happen. The multiple continuos on keyboards and strummed strings are so actively rhythmic, you will find yourself wondering if you have walked into a Spanish bodega while Andaluz gypsies are working their guitar magic. I have heard many period performances of Corelli, but NOTHING, EVER like this. Your feet will want to dance!

For once, there is a really full bass line, instead of the weak bass playing of the typical British period instrument groups that have become the standard in this repertoire. For once, just like with building pipe organ sonorities, the bass frequencies align and meld with the higher ones for beautiful, ecstatic sonorities. Another great thing is the lowered pitch and meantone tuning for the organ and other keyboards. When final chords arrive, the intonation is so centered, the resulting chord purrs like a cat, as it should.

The violin soloists, understanding the needs of improvising between the given pitches provide a wealth of divisions and improvisation in the solo parts that make for some delightful and powerful listening.

The DSD 5.0 recording sounds great at low, medium, and full levels, BUT this is one of those SACDs that sounds glorious on a wide-open speakers, especially one with completely matching towers all around.

GET THIS, OPEN IT WIDE, POUR OUT A GOOD BOTTLE OF ITALIAN WINE AND BATHE IN ITS BEAUTY! Oh, yes, share with friends...

I hope that Pentatone will ask these artists to complete the Corelli Op.6 for the label. I will buy that one, too!!!

Here's a nice selection of the Corelli Op.6 by Simon Murphy and his New Dutch Academy. One distinguishing thing about the music here is a heavy basso continuo. It adds a different touch to the sound of the music, and I rather enjoyed this.
This is another fine effort from the Pentatone team, and well worth a listen.
