Performance:   Sonics:
OK, no one has reviewed this disc so I will. I absolutely adore these performances. Yes, they are often taken at brisker tempos than what might be considered 'traditional' but they are an absolute delight. I find myself coming back to listen to these frequently. I wish Szell had recorded more of the Strauss Waltzes.

The sound quality is fairly good, though not great. These date from '62 and the sound is typical of Columbia recordings from that time period (spot miking and a little bright on the high frequencies). This particular disc, having been one of the earlier releases, suffers from some of the artificial "softness" or "roundness" often associated with early DSD transfers.

Definitely recommended though.

Performance:   Sonics:
I’ve owned these on LP and cassette. The virtuosity in Perpetuum Mobile alone is worth the price of the disc. Jaw-dropping virtuosity. These may not be quite as “Viennese” as others but they are played impeccably. And they are obviously having a dammed good time making these recordings.

The sound improvement on SACD is also amazing. Major improvements in dynamic range and bass response. Pianissimi are barely audible. Vivid sound stage. And with Szell, everything is crystal clear.

I can finally throw out my Odyssey cassette!
