...there was really something very special about planning a trip to the local music store and tangibly examining those crisply sealed items.

... and the extra excitement of travelling abroad to find discs that were unobtainable in your own country.

We got what 'we' wanted but 'we' lost what we had.

Ironically, Amazon is talking about the possibility of opening up retail stores. One can only imagine what that will be. Very doubtful they'll have a huge music department with Vinyl, SACDs, etc. Will most probably follow the mentality of stocking the top 100 pop/rock/jazz releases.

Hope I'm wrong but they're in business to make money.....not satisfy esoteric tastes!

Brick and mortar music outlets are also a dying breed in the US. There are very few left. The only place I know of to buy SACDs on the US East Coast is JR Music World in Manhattan.

I will miss the glorious days of HMV, Tower and Virgin superstores. But so what with the latest internet technology? Even the glorious days of arts and recordings are over.

I would just like to say that yesterday I purchased an SA-CD from LSO Live here in my local HMV... in Moncton, New Brunswick Canada of all places... this area is truly far out of the way when it comes to the audiophilia.

Very surprising to see an SA-CD in my local store that is a new release. The Tchaikovsky Symphonies Nos. 1 - 3 with Gergiev. A good price too for a 2 disc set. I was very pleased to see this happen.

It will be a great shame to see the end of brick and mortar music stores. Tragic. I can only hope this never fully happens.

Just noticed HMV results they are indeed in dire straits

Half year loss of £37 million, share price 34% down.Value of only £5.2 Million

Waiting for their closing down sale, Oh wait they don't sell anything I'm wanting to buy ,perhaps thats the problem.

Really don't think catering to a nouveau niche market could save the HMV* Titanic!

I wonder if the HMV in Japan will close down. Their online site is actually quite good, and informative.
