I would think some tape hiss would always show up?

The original Alan Dorkin was a comedy writer in the eighties. In Finnish it means "the Dorkiest person in (this) field of Expertise"

Tape hiss IS inherent in older recordings but modern technology like the Cedar NR system 'judiciously' removes clicks, pops and hiss rendering the older analogue recordings eminently salvageable/listenable.

Early attemps at post~production NR usually resulted in a 'pumping' sound and sounded totally unnatural. But DOLBY SR was used in the early 70's professionally and usually rendered a s/n ratio of 100db which eliminated much of the hiss in those earlier recordings.

So let's stop being unkind to early analogue recordings........they are all we have.

It's been confirmed but, as usual, there is that "secrecy" involved.......and I'm sure this is based on the success of Wish You Were Here. As always, patience (a LOT of it) is in order!

Until that long wait, if you have the desire I just ordered the 4.0 QUAD mix (DTS/DD) of Electric Light Orchestra's First Light (complete with a full fledged 96/24 stereo remaster) from Amazon UK

Thanks, i'll check out the E.L.O. cd.

...and please, can we have some more 5.1 SACD's soon !

Dolby SR did not come into use until mid-eighties, when digital was already widely used in classical recording. That 100 dB DR was achieved only in HF, by the way.

Try again.

Ah, schucks, should've googled it like you did, AmonRa.

1986 was the introduction of Dolby SR.........but dolby was applied to the early Vanguard recordings of the early 70's.....Dolby A professional.

Not so easy to throw "facts" around in an offhand way and expect people to believe them anymore, thanks to this thing called "Google", (actually I am just a shot string of code on Petrus' workstation).

After switching to an apple computer, iTunes got me downloading music for convenience' sake, but music just doesn't sound as good. Definitely give SACD a try. There are just too many classic recordings that aren't available on SACD yet (or cost an arm and a leg) otherwise I would do all my listening on SACD.

There are close to 5000 Classical SACD out and many are very cheap.

I think hiredfox was referring to the comment that there aren't enough classic recordings on SACD, whereas in fact, classic rock/pop and jazz are very well represented. Obviously classical music is even better represented.

To defend the original poster, only classical and jazz are well represented on SACD. Some "classic rock" exists, smidgen of soul.

The electronic and broad dance genres are barely represented, then theres hiphop, latin, bluegrass, country, folk, death metal, punk, let alone some of the more niche areas.

So at least 10k "classic records" missing. Maybe hirez mis-red classic as classical?
