Hello all,

Has anyone heard Helseth's performance of Haydn's trumpet concerto?

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00103BYLK/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER

I have Wolfgang Bauer's rendition of Haydn's trumpet concerto, but don't much care for it. I was wondering if anyone heard Helseth's rendition and how it stacks up against others.

Thanks for any info.

I own that recording. Since it's my only version of the piece, I can't compare it, but she certainly sounds great to me! Excellent intonation, lots of spirit, and the sound is crystal clear.

Is that really her name? There are one or two female trumpeters around now which has certainly glammed up the brass scene.

According to Wikipedia Tine Thing Helseth (phonetic pron.Tin-eh Ting Hel-set) is Norwegian. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tine_Thing_Helseth

Could it be a common Norwegian name and just looks strange to us English speakers?

Here's one review:

"In 2006 Tine was awarded 2nd Prize in the 2006 Eurovision Young Musicians finale in Vienna. Her fresh, effortless and throughout musical playing amazed and exited both audience and jury. Orchestras and conductors responded immediately to this extraordinary talent, resulting in a number of appearances as soloist with orchestras both in Europe and in Asia.

The classic trumpet concertos – at 20! Tine Thing Helseth performs these concertos with a natural spontaneity and a unique quality of sound. She interprets Haydn’s trumpet concerto – the very icon among them – with authority and a phenomenal variation of colour in her sound. Not only does Tine make it her own, together with the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra she presents a reading that sets a new standard for this concerto. The performances are all captured in transparent and brilliant SACD sound in Jar church, Oslo.

Tine Thing Helseth
Born in 1987, Tine belongs to a new generation of Norwegian soloists and indeed a new generation of brass soloists all together, – perhaps more influenced by the idiom of string players and singers than what used to be the case. Tine’s approach to music is refreshingly focused and straightforward – with an extra touch of artistic magic that reaches everyone who hears her playing. Studies with Arnulf Naur Nilsen (Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra) has further strengthened her natural abilities as a performer and communicator. At the age of 20 Tine Thing Helseth has the best reason in the world for playing and recording these concertos: She makes wonderful music!

"Helseth relishes Haydn’s epoch-making excursions into chromaticism with alacrity, especially in the slow movement which she shapes with disarming naturalness. A splendid début disc. More please!" -- Julian Haylock, International Record Review"

Wow!

Highly glowing review. Seems like it's a must-have SACD for the Haydn trumpet concerto.

Thanks for sharing!
