Hi fellow music fans,

I am new to SACD. I've been running vinyl and cd Stereo only through analog adcom gtp-400/adcom gfa-535 II to my vienna accoustics/beethoven baby grand speakers. I've been wanting to dive into SACD fidelity and picked up a new, inexpensive Sony s480 Blu-ray player that plays SACDs. So far, the difference that I can perceive is that the music is more supple and smooth. Gone is any harshness that I heard on CD.

My first question is: are you finding these Blu-ray players adequate for experiencing SACD playback? Thanks, -Jace

Can't say about your specific player Jace, but I can say about the Oppo 83 that I have definitely does very well on SACD playback.

I am using an Oppo BDP-95 for Blu-Ray, CD and SACD playback. I can tell you after hooking it up in several peoples audio systems for SACD, that it has not failed to impress every person who has heard it.

I guess it comes down to how good you want the sound to be if versatility is the main aim. Good as it is the Oppo is still a budget player in the sub-£1k class and there are far better SACD machines at the price.

The rest of the story though, is that if you want multi-channel and you are willing to spend $$ on a good pre/pro then the oppo going into the pre/pro via HDMI is quite another thing.

You have to spend a LOT of money to beat it.

I hope you have personal experience to make this claim. And if so, let's hear about it. What machine sounds better than a 95 in either stereo or multi-channel through its' analogue outputs for less than $1,000?

That's only £600. The Oppo is £1000 over here.

Well at least the Sony XA5400ES, the Marantz Pearl Lite and the Pioneer PDD 9 Mk2K
all of which I have tested in my own system

I give the nod to the SONY 5400ES if you can find one. Haven't heard the OPPO BDP 95 via HDMI but the SONY surely beats the pants off the NuForce BDP~83 via HDMI out....hands down!

Thanks for your ideas so far. Although the cheap Sony player sounded ok, I just upgraded to a Marantz UD5005 SACD/Blu-ray player. Comparing the two, I noticed a big improvement.

I'm not listening to multi-channel yet, but that may be the next upgrade. Are folks doing 3 channels or mostly 5.1? -Jace

The NuForce BDP~83 and Oppo 95 are two completely different machines.
