You know, I DLed Neapolitan Song from eClassical and I thought the sound was pretty bad for something that's supposed to be newly recorded for SACD (yes it's 16 bit but even so). Not a bad recording (of that one piece)....though it seems to lack a bit of, how to put it, 'oomph'.

Agree with Polly Nomial's review 100%
The performances are dreary (being polite).

Yup. An absolutely gorgeous recording of dull as dishwater performances.

Kudos to Carlo Ponti for recording one of the best accounts of Scheherazade I have ever
heard ! Amazing recording ! Looking forward to new releases by the Maestro !

Amazing recording and the best souding SACD i have purchased in a long time. Ponti and the
Russian National Orchestra really outdid themselves on this one. Love it !

I wouldn't doubt the sound in any way whatsoever; it's the performance that seems to put everyone to sleep.

My Favorite version of Scheherazade is a RBCD by Reference Recordings of Jose Serebrier and the London Philharmonic Orchestra recorded in 1999.  I find this performance far more nuanced and hence interesting and varied in emotion than the muscular performance by Reiner and the CSO that many seem to like.  The audio qualities of this RR CD surpass by a wide margin the Reiner SACD and are as good sonically as the very best SACD's I own.  Instrument definition, soundstage width and depth, real life dynamics, etc, etc.  One data point that suggests the recording technique is as important as the encoding format.  If you can't believe that buy one and find out for yourself.  I will be most surprised if you don't hear the difference in the first 5 seconds of the recording.

Serebrier's fine, but I do have to laugh at his view toward previous recordings. He really thinks his is the end all in Scheherazade recordings--I think there are better out there, Reiner, Stokowski, and Kondrashin just to name a view.

Add Ansermet and Temirkanov and Mackerras and......those are just a few with excellent sound.

That, of course, is KalSpeak.... referring to the fact that were it not for his famous parents, Carlo Ponti Junior would be doing the tarantella in a vat of juicy grapes employed by the Cinzano Vineyards in Southern Italy!

Rich parents probably more important that famous ones IMO! Could equally be said to be an argument for state funding of orchestras so they can make artistic decisions freely...

You have shown remarkable insight by correctly identifying his alma mater!

P.S.

How many working class conductors do you know about other than those that collect fares on London Buses.
