I have this problem one or two times a year with my Onkyo DV-SP502. It will play everything (dvd-v/a, cd, mp3, etc.) but SACD layer from my hybrid discs. In my case I think is the dust. My solution has been easy: to open the player, first I use a cotton tip moitened with alcohol and clean the lens carefully then I use a dry one to remove any particle of alcohol or dust and that's it!! All my sacd's will play flawless again. Of course keep in mind that the player guarantee is lost if you open the box. I hope this help =)

It's strange they didn't give any info about its frequency response in 20kHz-50kHz range, 20Hz-20kHz looks like a CD player's response to me.

I think that I implied what I think is the reason.

I have the exact same problem with the same model player. In my case, I tested 20 hybrid SACDs (stereo and multi-channel) and it read 3 of them as CDs. The other 17 worked fine. Barbazul suggests cleaning the lens so I guess I'll give that a shot.

At least I'm not alone.

Update: I just tried Zeus' suggestion of powering up with a hybrid disc in the tray. It (mostly) worked! Of the three problem discs, the Sony now recognizes two of them (both multi-channel). The third is a stereo SACD, but it's still only recognized as a CD; however I can always play that one on my CD player. (I lose the subwoofer bass track when playing CDs on the SACD player as my receiver doesn't have bass management, and my main right and left speakers are set to "small".)

Thanks Zeus!

I found that Oppo do not understand their own specifications and give out misleading info. I am in the market for a Blu-Ray player but it will not be an Oppo.

My CE595 just started to become erratic with regard to reading SACD layers as well. Has anyone had success with cleaning, or service manual, etc.

I will unequivocally state that the OPPO at its price point, properly tweaked, will reward you with superb picture and sound (but I still cannot recommend it as a RBCD player.......something had to be sacrificed for this little money).

In all the years and many thousands of dollars I have spent on audio equipment, this $499 (US) machine has to be one of the greatest bargains in audio history.

If you want a Universal player, Oppo will do the trick but if want a great SACD player, stay away. It took them ages to fix the ticks that were heard in between tracks by many users. Unfortunately, the fix caused some discs to freeze and now it looks like they are reverting that change in the next firmware.

The Oppo is still a fine choice for Blu-ray however.

I think Sony is a far better choice for a Blu-Ray player and much better value.

I have had the freeze-up issue with SACD's on the BDP-83SE. Before this issue I had others with the BDP-83SE too. To Oppo's credit they are very responsive to calls/emails, and they issue firmware corrections fairly quickly. In the past I had issues with a high-quality Sony ES disc player, a model that received rave reviews on many audio forums. Shortly after the five year warranty period expired (this Sony disc player was in storage for half its warranty period), the Sony would no longer play SACD's. When I finally got through to my regions authorized Sony repair center (long waits on hold all times I called), Sony tech quoted me a very high repair cost and said it could cost more depending on what was wrong. I sold the Sony unit for parts on eBay.
