like the two reviewers i enjoyed this.

new releases in the series seem, however, to have dried up.

has anybody any idea whether it will continue?

if so, with which symphonies, and when?

Telarc's response to my recent email regarding this series is that there is nothing scheduled at this time.

Well, there is an awful lot of Mahler about!

The number of potential purchasers must be finite, and since recording Mahler is more expensive than recording works needing a smaller orchestra, Telarc may very feel its investment is better placed in other areas.

I remember reading somewhere that Zander himself had asked Telarc for a pause in the recording scheme or at least to exclude the discussion discs for some releases. He did this request even before the last released recording (M1 right?). It was too much of a time consuming activity not least to prepare and record the discussion discs, time he did not feel he had. But the Telarc response to Zander was clear: Either we record and include discussion discs or we don’t record at all. Those discussion discs are selling points for Zander discs, and I think Telarc is correct here. So the lack of Zander discs may have something to do with this. The plans originally included all the Mahler and Beethoven symphonies.

very interesting.

it would be interesting also to know how the various releases so far have been selling, and whether that has any bearing on what appears to be the temporary (perhaps?) discontinuation of this series.

I have to agree. In terms of performances and sonics, I almost universally prefer Telarc's other "cycle" (split between Levi and Lopez-Cobos, and not quite complete).

Without the discussions, these are non-starters. Even with them, they are only mildly interesting. I'm surprised how often he speaks in non-musical terms about his views on Mahler. It's kind of meta-conducting. Maybe that's just something he feels is necessary to connect with the lay audience, but I'd prefer to hear some more technical information about what he does and why.

The competition is pretty fierce. Everybody seems to want to record Mahler's symphonies on SACD.

Bartok's concerto for orchestra as well. Pity, there is a lot of Bartok unrecorded, like the 2nd violin concerto which would have been really well served by Ms. Fischer, the OSR and Marek Janowski. PentaTone missed a real winner there!

So now JF is out of the SACD sweepstakes, and I am wondering what Gluzman, Litton and the Bergen Philharmonic would make of that Bartok. I purchased their Tchaikovsky/Glazunov disc on BIS weeks ago - but have yet to listen to it. Again, another place where the competition is fierce! But had it been the Bartok 2nd violin concerto, I'm sure I would have played the thing 10 times already!

Yeah, and where are the Bartok Piano Concerti? I'm surprised there aren't more of those on RBCD, let alone SACD.
