Now I'm really excited! If this was recorded by Polyhymnia it has the potential to be the "ultimate" Rite.

I know that John mentioned this in his review, but it should be noted that this is not the complete Firebird. Rather it is the 20 minute short 1919 suite. Jansons could at least have chosen the 1945 version which is almost twice as long. Now I shall listen to this and the Berlioz Requiem on Pentatone.

This looked good on paper but has got a mediocre review in International Record Review as lacking punch and danger.

The sound on this is great, like most RCO Lives. I think the Rite is great! The Firebird is great too, but I agree I would have preferred the original full ballet.

I found this dead boring.

John (Geohomind) said:

"In terms of fidelity to the score, building of tension and relaying at least the impression of dance, this new one is a thrilling ride, with impeccably disciplined orchestral ensemble." He also described the recording as a "stunningly realistic sound picture of the orchestra" - an orchestra which is certainly one of the best in the world!

Whom to believe ?

Both, of course.
No two opinions need be the same. Music is often a love/hate affair.
The only opinion that counts is YOUR OWN.

I have often found that when Edvin reviews something he likes, or recommends music that I haven't heard before, that I agree with his assessment in spades. I have also found that when he doesn't like something for whatever reason, that generally (but this isn't always true) it isn't nearly as bad as he describes. The disc under discussion here is obviously a case in point. John Miller (Geohominid) doesn't say this is the Sacre of all Sacres but he indicates that it is pretty darned good for several reasons he outlines. Edvin says it is "dead boring".

Steven says the only opinion that counts is "YOUR OWN"

I have this on order - When it comes, I doubt I will find it "dead boring" but neither do I expect to find it "definitive" or whatever other descriptor one would use to indicate a supremely inspired performance.

But I do expect to be thrilled by the sound of an orchestra reproduced (as nearly as my equipment will allow) to replicate the sound I would experience if I were in the hall itself! That alone, even if the performance is simply "competent" would be reason to buy.

But according to Geohomind, the performance is actually quite a bit better than that! Purchase of this disc seems to me as they say, "A no-brainer"! The only regrettable thing being the truncated Firebird.

Bruce, Im astonished why you make such postings.
It seems from your own comments that you have already made up your mind about this disc.
The fact you choose to have a go at Edvins comments prior to your receiving the disc speaks volumes.Whether you understand it or not.
We dont really need you to tell us "what counts" even quoting somebody else. I cannot see any reasonable point in you mentioning it,especially when You seem to have pre decided?.
I personally have been annoyed at some of Edvins reviews and comments.Especially when the work was one I looked forward to.Eventually it was as below average as he had indicated.

Dave,

I believe I am likewise astonished now that I think about it.

I believe that mostly it was to point out that this disc, if not the end-all, be-all of Sacres must, to Geohominid at least, not be "Dead Boring". But perhaps you are right in your unspoken criticism, wherein you imply that RCO Live do not need me to defend their decision to release this disc.

Another part of what must have been the "why" of my posting is a gut response I invariably have to what almost seems a pathologically unrelenting negativism. I just felt I needed to say something in refutation. We all have our "buttons" that others can push. Negativism is one of mine and I should guard against being a reactor.

You think I have already made up my mind about this disc without hearing it. I have expectations - that is all. Expectations I fervently hope are fullfilled.

Where you leave me behind is your comment:

"We don't really need you to tell us "what counts" even quoting somebody else. I cannot see any reasonable point in you mentioning it,especially when You seem to have pre decided?."

It would seem that any opinion expressed in a forum amounts to the poster telling others what the poster thinks counts. Am I such a pariah in your mind that I should not do this too? Or do you take exception only to the fact that I used another's review as the basis for my having said what I did?
