Just a quick question. I noticed on the Marantz homepage that their top model SACD-player SA11-S1 supposedly has 6 channel audio out and yet I've heard that it only plays stereo. Does anyone konw the truth of this matter?

Thanks for clearing that up! Though it seems like an odd decision...

From the manual for the SA-11S2 (the replacement model):

"This unit is a stereo-only player, and so it cannot play high-quality multi-channel audio areas. (It does not recognize multi-channel areas.)"

Makes you wonder what the good people at Marantz think that PentaTone, Telarc, BIS, LSO Live, Tudor, ATMA, Avie, Channel, Sound Mirror, Polyhymnia and so on are doing making all those hi rez multi-channel recordings that won't play as such on their so-called "high end" players. This is something that rubs me really the wrong way. I am not so annoyed by Marantz as I am by Ayre because I know that THEY are capable of making a true high end machine, but their only sacd model is just stereo.

And I'm not happy with the fact that I'm not interested in video and I have to pay for all the video add-ons to get multichannel SACD playback. I'd much rather have the extra money that I have to pay for the video add-ons spent on doing things proplerly for a change (very low jitter clocks, etc) for multichannel SACD playback only.

Marantz sold CD/SA-CD multichannel players in the past and, because they offered good sound for the price, many people used them in stereo-only systems. The number of people that want dedicated multichannel players sans DVD must be pretty small ... too small for large consumer electronics companies to bother with. It seems to me that HDMI output is the future for multichannel.

Current ones, yes, but I have the SA17S1 and it is multichannel.

HDMI is not for me and to me it sounds like a recipe for poor sound. Good sound is only going to come from well done separate components.

A strange fact, then.
Or, I'm the strange one. I don't care for movies in surround. Before buying my gear, I thought that the sound, including the surround option was more important than the movies themselves. I don't watch too many movies, but when I do, I don't bother with the surround thing anymore. With music it's for me a whole different thing.

Sure, there are dvd concerts and fine dts albums such as the Mode label's audio only dts albums but even dts ones can't measure to SACD surround standards. Haven't tried the dts HD Master Audio system, though.

Anyway, I briefly listened to the Marantz DV7001 and it seemed like a good surround player, actually! I think it's DSD path direct, even!(?)
