The amazon review of this is pretty postive. After the perfect beauty of Fischer's Bach, I hardly feel the need for anything else. But if someone else from here, has heard this and would like to comment?.....Look, forgetting the taste or lack of taste regarding the cover, we could now apparently use a new heroine or hero of the violin on the SACD scene. Who is this record label "Ancalagon" ?

Compared to her earlier nude covers (with the violin strategically placed) this is positively tame. It just goes to show that selling sex is not confined to Puniversal!

I frankly have boycotted her albums on the grounds that her covers suggest she has bad taste!

Like Arthur, I regard Laura's coverart in the same way that I regard the skull and cross-bones on a bottle of bathroom cleanser. I must've heard her play several times on CBC radio, but it wasn't memorable. What WAS memorable was a half-hour interview with her: she's a vapid creature of the pop world who happened to get too many music lessons. Typical quote: "Uh, I don' know...".

Very much on the other hand, her brother Scott is a genuine and excellent musician whom I have had the honour to hear 'live' numerous times (and he speaks intelligently when interviewed). http://www.franksalomon.com/presskits.asp?ArtistID=20&File_Name=606

Well that's disappointing isn't it! As regards brother Scott, would it be worthwhile (to us) should PentaTone, BIS, Channel Classics or Chandos or some other label we hold in high regard explore a relationship with him?

That would probably be with the St Lawrence Quartet -- INCLUDING Geoff Nuttall: "...les amples mouvements du flamboyant Geoff Nuttall, premier violon à la chevelure imprévisible." --L. Renaud

I'm sure Scott has raised the average, but its still my least-favourite quartet.

Okay George, thanks for the extensive review. You've convinced me to close my eyes and order this disc and -- judging by your review -- I'll be eating my dismissive words when it arrives. I.e. any violinist who can be compared to Mr Kurtz is worth an unbiased listen.

That's Colonel Kurtz, to you.

Beg your pardon sir, I was referring to Joseph Conrad's original "Mr Kurtz, he dead."

I didn't care for it all--not sonically or musically. The acoustic is a bit too dry and her interpretations lack drama. Julia Fischer's SACD of these works on Pentatone is superior in every respect.

Arthur Grumiaux (Philips Originals), Nathan Milstein (DG Originals), Henryk Szeryng (DG), and Julia Fischer (Pentatone) are all splendid recordings of this monumental music. This vapid little twit shouldn't even be mentioned in their company. If you ask me why, I can do no better than to quote Lara herself, "uh, I dunno."
