this seems to be the only multichannel mahler 7 accessible to the european purchaser - a fairly odd (and irritating) situation, given that there's a lot of other MC mahler available.

does anybody know of any likely/impending sources of an MC 7th?

alternatively, a few more comments on this recording would be very helpful. i hesitate to buy it as i didn't really warm to either interpretation or recording of the mahler 2 i bought in this series.

The extrovert sections are exciting and virtuosic, but IMHO MTT tends to push through the "magical" sections, (such as the beautiful "moonlit" music of the first mov't), missing the said magic and delicacy. If this section and the 3rd mov't are most interesting to you, the best I've heard are Sinopoli/Philharmonia and Levine/Chicago, sadly not SACD

many thanks - it's probably the opening movement and finale i'm most often drawn to. i've always wanted to hear the sinopoli....

This time I have to disagree with you Jon.
Although it is a good recording by any standard yes,I also hear and am not happy to hear the overmiked cut and paste effects clearly audible via headphones on my system. And the lack of deep natural bass as so clearly heard live at the Proms this season and also on the BBC music bundled rbcd recording, make me much less enthusiastic than you regarding this recording.
I have quite a few other SACDs that come much closer to the real thing than this one.
2 L Channel and Chandos and some early pure DSD BIS titles are better examples of truly natural recording techniques IMO.
Good yes, but not at all outstanding is my verdict of this SFO production. In fact my disappointment with it has stopped me from buying any of the others in this series.
Someone here recently suggested I hear "too much" via headphones.Well it never bothers me on truly natural realistic recordings but sure reveals flaws, and delivers things very much as recorded, warts and all.
Something I have been fortunate to be able to compare at sessions often enough to be able to know fairly well that what I do hear with this system is very accurate to the source.
Furthermore , the SFO do seem "Lost at Sea" more often than the BBC symphony orchestra under Gianadrea too.
I am still waiting for the full hi res reference recording of this work. Maybe Channel and the BFO will nail it one day?
ps Costa Rica was great this time.
Next stop Asia
All the best Chris

Sorry to correct you, but the orchestra on the Noseda disc is the BBC Philharmonic, based in Mancheste,r not the BBC Symphony.I attended the Noseda performance you refer to at the Bridgewater Hall and it was stunning. Shame it will not appear on SACD.

The Gergiev/LSO SACD is not available in Europe?

Chris. When I met MTT some time ago we talked a lot about Mahler, and I can assure you that neither he nor the orchestra is "lost at sea". Maybe they don´t perform to your liking, but that is another business.

Several reviewers have referred to this disc as the 7th to have. Otherwise try Zinman on RCA

I believe I read that Ivan Fischer would be doing M7 this coming year.
