I bought a PS3, hoping to use it for SACD and Blu-ray playback, as well as games. Unfortunately, I don't have any SACDs yet to test out.

My first SACD, "Kind of Blue" by Miles Davis is on order, because the Rudy Van Gelder remastered CD version acted as one of my favorite reference discs. Until it arrives, I cannot test my PS3's SACD playback at all.

Does anyone have a PS3 who can test SACD playback? Any additional info on this would be appreciated. I read the Wikipedia article, and it made me worried that playback through the PS3 would be compromised.

You mean http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Playstation3 ?

It doesn't provide any details regarding PCM or DSD output via HDMI, or about SACD playback in general.

Most info so far I got out of the other recent PS3 threads on SA-CD.net and here: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=760763&page=1&pp=30

CE Daily wrote about Sony's annual European PR/dealer event held at Rhodos last week: "Sony also plans to make its PS3 more alluring to audiophiles. The company soon will release simple instructions for damping the PS3’s mechanics to turn the game console into a high-end CD player -- details to be disclosed."

I am still stuck having to use my denon 2900 unless Sony starts supporting DVD-A, which is less likely then them supporting HD-DVD. I also still use my old Pioneer PD-65 as a CD player in my rack, as I love its drive mechanism and warmth of sound.

With prices on the PS3 coming down to sane levels, I'm interested in Sony's audiophile intentions for this machine. Despite the fact that I hate having multiple players for multiple formats, I am still wary of having an (almost) all-in-one solution.

Is this in a print version, or is there a link? I'm interested in how they plan to do it.

Hi,

don't you think that the lack of any kind of indicators other than full video display is cumbersome. DVD-A players (that also have this same display-always-on feature) typically had some kind of track information in the indicators. Now, if you want to listen to certain tracks or change from stereo to multi-channel, you always need to switch on the gaming display. Further, if you are using the native analog stereo outputs of PS3, you'll need and adpter because there are no RCA or other standard connectors in PS3.

PS3 is far from an optimal all-in-one solution, after all.

best regards,

Esa

Sorry, it's basically in print only. It is not published online.

I think the "fan noise" would put off a lot audiophiles
compared to the silent mechanism of a dedicated player
and if in fact the SACD DSD signal is converted to PCM then Analog... that would be another issue..
although i have it set up in the family room and ambient noise actually blocks out the fan
I have noticed the CD playback is quite good.. you have the option to change the output frequency
http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/settings/outputfrequency.html
I will be looking forward to these "dampening instructions" and see if they work...
