Brett, 60 5 star reviews over at AmazonUK and cheap~o~ta: Rodrigo: Concierto de Aranjuez - Karadaglic, Nezet-Seguin. I also have Rodrigo: Concierto de Aranjuez, Fantasía para un gentilhombre, Concierto madrigal - Yepes, Monden, Navarro and the former's sonics are superior (albeit stereo). Music should be fun and if pundits want to analyze every note....what's the fun in that?

Sympathy For The Devil is HOT, Hot, hot. Great use of surrounds. Imagine if the Stones committed to 5.1 remasters? A glimpse.

Completely agree, Ralphie. Music should be fun!

Not the dark clouds of preconceived notions.

Early Quad is maligned by some. Some QQers say it's not discrete enough. Some here say it's thin or airy. Mono, stereo, Quad, 5.1... have such a range of soundstages. This is why I have trouble with the idea that all recordings should be judged by the same scale or standards when reviewing a disc.
Even though the results vary, I like all of these recordings. And... Vintage 4.0 offers much sonic & musical pleasure.

The Stones in surround would also be most welcome.
I'm glad to hear Universal still has a few tricks up its sleeve.

Brett, I love the old QUAD reissues as much as anyone but I was disappointed in the Pentatone/DGG Quad reissue of the Concierto de Aranjuez as the sound was a bit 'lightweight' compared to all the other Pentatone reissues.

It's your $$ and your call, but be advised in advance.

I know what you're talking about, Ralph.

But... Judging from varying reactions to AF's The Best of the Doors, it's clear that one man's trash is another man's treasure.

So much for a universal standard. LOL!

Maybe we should all look back to the very beginning of this super-duper stupid *-A thing, and see who are one of the tech visionaries? (lol)

I, for one, predicted the death of BD-A when it is announced. The reasoning then was the analogy of BD-A to DVD-A, not only in term of proposed content, but also in term of serious defect in the proposed UI design.

Sorry, I did not spend a single penny on this format. I could pick some titles up when I see them in some estate sales for $1 each and resell them on ebay to whoever values the format for $20/ea. (That is exactly what I did several times for some DVD-A titles)

The only DVD-A title I keep in my collection is Muti's Aida.

That said Allen, what is your favorite format and why, currently?

AFAIK, Allen, the Muti Aida is NOT a DVD~Audio disc but rather a DTS 5.1 title (I have it in my collection).

EMI never released it as a DVD~Audio disc.

However, it's a splendid 3 disc set with stellar performances and great discrete use of the rear channels.

IMHO, one of DTS's finest moments and holds up surprisingly well sonically in this "hi res" world of ours.

And although the BD~A format was never fully utilized to its maximum potential, there have been some brilliant BD~As released as good as any DVD~A or SACD discs I presently have in my collection.

Damn! you are right about DTS 3CD set! that just reduce me to zero when it comes to DVD-Audio.

Then I guess I just briefly owned a full collection of the Everest DVD-A for no more than 1 month. I got them $1/ea, and listened to some of the titles, and I hated the usability part of the DVD-Audio playback, to the extend that I have to rid of them ASAP.

I think I asked some questions about how stupidly the UI can be on this site, then. (lol)

SACD, prefer it to be multi-channel, though.

Those stereo only Japanese SACD is a pure non-sense. But in turn of usability, a stereo SACD is still better than a DVD-Audio, MCH or not.

I do not think BD-Audio stands a chance to success from the very beginning, it is the same DVD-Audio trick and hack, with clumsy UI.

BD-A is also nonsense for the current majority of releases, which are just 24/96 stereo.

As far as physical releases go, they could put the same content (an album length of 24/96 PCM stereo) on an audio-only DVD-Video disc (also called DAD), a format which Classic Records already introduced 15 years ago. These discs play in every DVD player, they can be ripped more easily, and there is no copyprotection restriction concerning digital output (S/PDIF) from the player, for those who like to use a seperate DAC.

actually, if they were going to standardise on the blu-ray format, using the 8cm mini blu-ray discs would be ideal. Same storage as a dual layer dvd but a lot smaller. adding mShuttle by default would remove the need to rip the content as well.
