The above box set [Mahler Symphony 1-9 Boxset performed by Abbado/ Lucerne FO] of all the symphonies costs 28 quid but what it gives you is not quantifiable.

I just ordered this boxset because although I've got a few Mahler symphonies, this is a fairly cheap way to fill the gaps. Fwiw, it's been about £45 for six months, so at £23.68 delivered, now's the time to buy :)

What is the best SACD of Mahler's First Symphony? Fischer, Tilson Thomas, Nott or something else? What do you think? I cannot decide... :)

I was just about to search for this thread to update on my recent Abbado/ Mahler boxset purchase, so thanks for bringing the thread back to the top :)

I can't say what the best M1 SACD is, but I listened to Abbado/Lucerne Festival Orchestra performing M2 Resurrection last night and I think it's the best M2 I've heard because it had something I've not quite heard or felt from any of the other versions and that je nais se qui, is vim! The M2 contained in the boxset is the only Abbado Lucerne performance, the rest are Abbado/ Berlin PO, but having heard and enjoyed the Abbado/Lucerne M2, I'm tempted to buy the £60 BDV containing the complete Abbado/Lucerne M1-7.

A lot of good choices, although I'm partial to MTT. And don't forget Mahler: Symphony No. 1 - New York Philharmonic/Bernstein, albeit in analog-sourced stereo.

I like Fischer a lot, but I think Jansons may top his. Will have to go back and listen!

My favorite Mahler 1 starting back with Bruno Walter 50+ years ago and covering a couple of dozen in between is Mahler: Symphony No. 1 - Zander. Appropriately coupled with Christopher Maltman's gorgeously sung Wayfarer Songs and including the almost 80 minute discussion disc that Telarc used to provide with the Zander series (thanks to Linn for picking up the pieces with a superb 2nd) it's a stunning rendition and a great bargain.

Yes, you should. The only negative is that they didn't record the 8th on Blu-Ray.

Agreed. That almost complete cycle is my favorite. I had been cool to Abbado before seeing and hearing this wonderful set. I also have the Jansons Concertgebouw BD-V, which I also like, though not quite as much. It is in 96k, and I believe those same performances are the same ones captured on SACD.

Thanks for the recommendations guys :)

Fitz, are you saying the Abbado/Lucerne performances are available on SACD? I had a look but nothing came up?

He is referring to the RCO cycle, most of which came out on SACD, then they released a BluRay set of the entire cycle.

I am not sure but I don't think the SACDs and BluRays are all the same performances.
