I am sorry to discover that yet another retail and mail order outlet has had to close its doors. Bath Compact Discs closed on 16th January. Retail outlets in the UK are dwindling fast. I checked the HMV in Bath and was not surprised to find a very poor classical selection consisting of only three labels: Naxos, Universal and Classic FM. Obviously no SACD. It is HMV which deserves to fail not the hard working indies.

Yes it is a shame to see them go. Not long ago they were Gramophone magazine's shop of the year. When they moved to smaller premises a few years ago it seemed that the writing was on the wall. FWIW I was under the impression that their mail order business will continue.

A shame to lose this retailer, I have bought many discs there over the years and the staff were always very helpful and knowledgeable. Talking to them before Christmas, it seems that there was simply not enough footfall to keep the business viable. They said at the time that they intended to keep the mail order business going, but according to their facebook page they have now closed this down too.

Let's just say that if the circumstances had been the same at Amazon, Vodafone, Starbucks or Apple, they would still be in business -- misinformation on the phone from C&E about VAT procedures for international sales and S/H sales meant a back-dated VAT bill killed them. They're not that unhappy and are moving on to pastures new -- both more relaxing and probably more enriching.

Very sad. I had the chance to visit and purchase some SACDs during a vacation last summer (thanks to the forum members who brought my attention to it).
