Oh dear...please help me (with some disc operation technicalities)

I just purchased a "pure audio" blu ray version of Crime of the Century from the Amazon market place, some seller called "beaches_entertainment."

I popped my "brand new" disc into a traditional 4 year old sony blu ray player hooked up to a Harman Kardon AVR using a dedicated optical cable for audio....

Now, never has my HK AVR not been able to decode the various playback modes and always indicates whether it is encoding , Dolby Digital, DTS, etc.

But in this case.....the disc itself won't even allow me to choose any of the 3 playback modes. In fact, as soon as the disc is "downloadeded" into the sony player , the music just begins to play automatically and no "Dolby Digital" or "DTS" gets displayed on my HK AVR as does with ALL my other blu ray(Audio) discs.

The music does sound loud though

This lack of operation from the disc is not normal!
Not for any DVDA disc or blu ray DVD disc(whether a movie or audio only)

Did I get ripped off? Is my disc defective?

'Anybody else have this issue or can make some suggestions?

Two things come to mind, HiRezNut: Your 4 year old SONY player is desperately in need of a firmware update and the Optical cable WILL NOT carry the hi res signals (PCM 5.1/Dolby True HD/DTS Master Audio) from your player.

HDMI is IN ...... Optical cables are OUT.

Some of the newer discs also mandate that your current BD player has the latest firmware updates or else they will not work.

Hate to say it, but you are in desperate need of a system upgrade...and I say this with the kindest of intentions!

Oh, I thought Optical should be able to carry Stereo upto 96/24?

F/W could well be the culprit but maybe the 192/24 on this BD is causing HiRezNut's problems too?

Interesting too they are saying the disc sounds loud, I've found it to be anything but..

Silly, me, Adam: forgot COTC is a stereo BD~A disc but it well might be a firmware upgrade issue. Optical will carry a 96/24 stereo signal but in this day and age, perhaps HDMI IS the way to go.

Will be receiving my BD~A of Crime shortly. Will definitely report back ASAP if NOT sooner!

I have downloaded the 192/24 AIFF files from HD and have listened to the full album a couple of times via headphones (Sennheiser Momentum + Meridian Explorer + I Tunes as I am away from home). The details are certainly amazing. There are many things I had never listened before. The dynamic range is wide and the voices full and not as dirty as I feared.

Nevertheless, I have encountered many moments of gross distortion, evident in the bass at the end of School and Hide in your shell and also in Asylum. The cymbals crash awfully many times as well. The highs on the piano sound break subtly in Rudy. fredblue has written about this as well, many posts ago. I also clearly noticed ghost (pre-echo) appearances of the harmonica at the beginning of School.

Have any of you besides Alan encountered this problem? I love the music anyway, so I can tolerate these shortcomings being this such an old recording. But I wish to know if the distortion I mention is present also on the files on the Blu-Ray. Can anybody throw some light on this matter? To my ears they all sound like limitations on the master tape that could not be eliminated during the remaster. But maybe the experts might help me identify the origin of these distortions.

Thanks a lot in advance.

HiRezNut, you are limiting your options by utilizing optical instead of HDMI. The optical should play uncompressed PCM 2.0 stereo but perhaps the player is in need of a firmware update as I mentioned (Best to check with SONY regarding your particular model).

Also, you could try using analogue out cables for uncompressed stereo playback but if the player needs an upgrade doubtful even this option will work.

So, far I have read numerous good/bad reviews of the Universal BD~A of Crime but not one mention of the disc's inability to allow user navigation.

BTW, I have ordered numerous Universal BD~As from Amazon third party vendor Beaches Entertainment and never once have I ever received a bad disc from them.....and their prices are usually the cheapest of all Amazon vendors, as well.

Mystified. I've now tried this BDA every which way I can think of on my main setup (PCM, DTS HD MA, Dolby True HD) with the BDP set to Bitstream the codecs "as is" and then switching it, getting the player's DACs to decode them instead as PCM (all @192/24.. every conceivable way) and no matter what I do, I still don't like it - there's still all the negatives I've already mentioned here & elsewhere online (bloated low end, distortion abounds - particularly evident on vocals, splashy cymbals, tizzing quality to keys which are especially naff on "Bloody Well Right"..) if this is the best Hi-Res that can be extracted from the source I'll eat my bloody hat. The Hi-Res download and CD may well be brilliant and I've no reason to doubt everyone who's said so thus far.. but this HFPA BDA, on my setup and in every configuration I can muster at the very least, is a total and utter disappointment.

Hey, Adam, I find the very same defects on the 192/24 files downloaded from HD. I blame the old masters. But I find it perplexing that many other reviewers do not listen to all this gross distortion. Might this be the very reason why the SHM-SACD was postponed indefinitely? Maybe the masters are too trashy to produce an audiofile product?

I have listened to the Blu-ray version of Crime of the Century several times. I do not hear any distortion you make reference to. Please be more specific as to this 'gross' distortion including tracks/location.
