I wonder does this Blu-Ray Solti Ring increase the likelihood of a hi-res download becoming available? I hope so.

The 24/48 downloads have been available for some time, since the Deluxe Ring was released.

The problem has been that at $50 per opera, the price for 24/48 downloads is the same as the deluxe box that includes the Blu-Ray of all the operas in 24/48.

... and this BD-A alone looks like it costs a little less than 100€, that is only a bit less than half the price of the 17xCD + 1xDVD + 1xBD-A boxset by the same label Wagner: Der Ring des Nibelungen - Solti (258€) ???!!!
This is one horribly expensive single disc !

Yes, but it is easily worth every penny. This, "the greatest recorded cycle of all time", has never sounded better than this. That is not to say its sonics are not dated in some ways and inferior to many more modern recordings. But, it is still a quite remarkably good sounding glimpse into a, perhaps THE, greatest historical landmark in recorded history. Performance-wise and in terms of casting, it is the benchmark for Ring recordings and performances.

Plus, it is, what, 15+ hours on one disc. Should you be paying for some small, marginal profit over the single disc manufacturing cost? Or, should you be thanking modern technology for the amazing quantity of outstanding music that could be accommodated on a single disc? I paid much more for the LP set back in the late 70's - much, much more inflation-adjusted - and it just does not sound this good.

Hey, you could always find that Esoteric set on SACD, which cost way, way more and which, there is reason to believe, is not as well mastered. Plus, with the SACD's you get to have all the fun of changing discs.

I think the point is not that it is worth the cost, but rather that at the cost you had might as well get the deluxe edition with all the CDs and books along with the BD-A.

Of course, everyone will have a different perspective on this but I for one will be delighted to get hold of a Hi-Res verison of the Solti Ring for less than $100. To me that's great value, and I can also dispose of the LPs at long last!
