First Messiaen, now Berio!

A standing ovation to Ondine from me.

Indeed, more Berio please. What about his string quartets? Yesterday, I was listening to the glorious quartets by Willem Pijper, and I don't expect those to appear on SACD anytime soon, but surely some more modern and late modern string quartets or any music of the more adventurous kind are warranted on SACD (currently, there is not even a SACD of Berg's two quartets!) -- with all due respect to Channel, Chandos etc., there isn't much willingness among them to commission the more difficult post second-Viennese repertoire, such as Kairos /search/kairos and Neos /search/neos do (who unfortunately only seem to release on SACD, when multichannel is strictly called for).

I realize this is off-topic (the CDs are not SA), but has anyone heard Lintu in Enescu?

I was looking forward to this release; a certain retailer was even going to deliver on a Sunday (a first for me).

They sent me this instead: http://www.tru-thoughts.co.uk/release/prince-fatty-meets-nostalgia-77-in-the-kingdom-of-dub-tru297

Oh well, now awaiting a replacement!

Picky, eh?

I have the Rozhdestvensky, Foster, and Lintu recordings of symphonies 2 and 3 and the Rozh... and Foster of 1 (Lintu's version of 1 is due out next year, I think). IMHO Luntu is an easy winner for 2 and 3 for both sound and performance.

If you enjoy this music, I wouldn't hesitate, SACD or not.

Thanks, fafnir.

I am looking to replace my old Olympia six-CD survey of Enescu's orchestral music (conducted by Horia Andreescu). I am sure the sound on the Ondine discs is far superior; what I'm weighing up is whether the gain in sound is worth the loss of fillers. Some of them I can live without, such as the study symphonies; others, like the orchestral suites, I'd be loth to lose. There's an old Erato collection containing the orchestral suites (conducted by Foster, I think), with which I could supplement the Ondine discs, so that might be the way to go.

Sorry if I'm talking to myself.

Yes, the Foster contains the three suites plus the two RR. I haven't heard it. The Lintu symphony discs don't duplicate any of these. but contain other interesting music.

This is quite far off topic. If you want to contact me, you can use my email, which is included in my profile.
