I didn't realize that my favorite version, Mahler: Symphony No. 6, R. Strauss: Metamorphosen - Barbirolli, is on SACD. No way I'm paying over $1,000 for it, though.

As you probably know Sir John always conducted M6 with the correct Andante/Scherzo order (a rarity at the time) but was appalled when EMI issued the LP with the order reversed.

He complained and when it was reissued the order was amended, as in every subsequent CD issue - and this SACD set I assume.

So in one respect despite the original LP cover art this set *may* not actually replicate the original LP issue...

Yeah, I don't really get the fetish for having the exact LP track order. Then again, I don't really have many of the Japanese SACDs - paying $40 for a single 2-channel SACD of an older recording isn't of interest to me most of the time. I paid less than that for the entire cycles by Zinman and Gergiev (and MTT, but that was a pricing error I think).

I have the LP set since it was released and like it a lot. Musically it is my favourite Mahler 6th.
I know the 5th has been released as a hi res download most probably from the 24/96 pcm remaster of the original analogue tapes.
Karajan's Mahler 5 is also the best played recording imho.
In the mid/late 70s they were the world's best orchestra and in some respects still unrivalled imo.
And if one can live with DGG's multimiking of the time the SQ is actually quite ok too.
Unlike some here I was a Karajan fan in my youth and devoured basically everything he recorded rather uncritically until I realized that there were conductors who definitly did for example Stravinsky better than Karajan.
But for Mahler and Wagner and other classic Operas he is still one of the greatest conductors ever imo.
Regarding "correct order"it is not really an issue for me either on SACD,LP or as download I can play whatever order I want.
And if I remember correctly Mahler himself tried both ways in performance before deciding.

No, Mahler only ever conducted M6 with the Andante/Scherzo order.
