Duly refered from another thread, discussing Szymanowski/Gergiev on LSO Live /showthread/104374//y?page=first wherein its general awfulness was aired for all.

You may think yourself lucky listening to this 'bloody awful' recording. At least the LSO knows how to play a bit.

For completely ham-fisted, limp, lethargic, soporific, plodding, pedestrian and downright bad playing, try this- Bassoon. Orchestra - Jakob Meyers

Strange, other recordings in this Musicaphon series are musically much stronger - and I have reviewed them as such. And the SQ by Cybele remains excellent. But for downright musical drive-you-from-the room nastiness, this one (at least after the opening Honegger) would take a lot of beating.

I wonder how THIS one got approved?

Do I feel a new thread coming on... AVOID THIS SACD, IT SUCKS?

Yes, I do. I am sure other folk would like to blow the lid on some of their favourite stinkers.

Is this thread even necessary?

Nice thread, there are so many recommendations of popular works that it could be almost as helpful to know what to avoid.

Avoid this one: /showreviews/5629#8488

Sound is a disaster; nothing special about the music/performances either.

Nice. But how can we leave out Membran?

Try Elgar: Cello Concerto - Yoohong Lee/Menuhin

Excruciatingly poor sonics and a limp, lethargic and utterly soporific performance of Elgar's great cello concerto.

There are many that could be mentioned ... I also get frustrated to buy discs and find that I am unhappy with them. But oddly, I suspect, in an age where there is 'infinite' content, any publicity (even negative) helps being noticed ... and looked at ... and even considered ... so a thread like this will probably just boost sales of the 'offenders' by bringing more attention to them.

And as we all have our own views on such things (and not everyone shares the same opinion) ... perhaps the appropriate place to castigate the unpleasant ones is on their own pages (where it will not get lost), and perhaps most aptly with written reviews ... even short ones.

Sound not so disastrous in m/ch. But then again, stereo is an imperfect medium for judging the sonic qualities of a recording ..(runs, ducks for cover)..

Thanks.

1) Seriously, folks buying stinkers like these - even after being warned - kinda deserve them! These are public health warnings, not invitations to masochism.

2) Yep, I have castigated seriously bad sacds before in this Forum using the formal review process. Some of these generated a high degree of controversy. This current approach seems more concise, is far quicker to submit and somewhat safer.

The original idea is that folks should save money rather than buying bad product out of ignorance. Caveat Emptor.

So here is another one, which I originally slammed via review for both sound and performance - especially the Gershwin.

Gershwin: An American in Paris, Rhapsody in Blue, Ravel - Pascal Rogé

You tell me: better to review or simple name-and-shame?

Cheers

I'll add. Gergiev's Scheherazade. You'll drown in a sea of echoes. Exciting performance though.
