Releases like this make me scratch my head sometimes, although mainly in terms of what else there would be in the majors' vaults to remaster and release in high-resolution). SACDs mastered from PCM sources or PCM transfers from analogue are one thing, but from RBCD PCM sources? What good can a roundabout from RBCD PCM via analogue mastering (on the fly, no tape used or noise added), re-clocking (big deal, show me a studio that doesn't, I mean, I won't do without at home either) and conversion to DSD do? Regardless, I know of no label that does this better than Esoteric (I've heard several such discs now: Schönberg/Berg/Webern/Karajan, Mendelssohn/Abbado or Brahms/Kleiber spring to mind among other). The results aren't necessarily miraculous, but in every such case I've preferred the Esoteric reissue to the original CD. Musically and interpretatively this is certainly a very fine album. Whether or not a reissue like this is worth the price of admission is a different matter.

Greetings from Switzerland, David.
