I received this Bach recording today and I love it! Superb sound--the piano has lots of presence, but there is plenty of hall sound, and Günther's playing is wonderful. He doesn't try to mimic a harpsichord--he uses a fair amount of pedal and dynamics and reminds us he is playing a concert grand PIANO! He leans more toward the romantic end of the continuum than a historically informed performance, which is fine with me: I like big-boned Bach! His technique allows him to clearly articulate the fugue voices without resorting to overly-staccato playing. The liner notes include several photos of the recording sessions. The three front channel mics look to be about 6-8 feet from the piano, and the two rear mics are only about another 2-3 feet behind the front. I'd think the engineer would put the rear mics farther out into the hall. There is a bit direct sound in the rear channels, but it is not distracting.
I hope Book II follows quickly.
