An excellent SACD remaster. Given the age of the analogue masters the transfer has produced a surprisingly natural and pleasing sound.

If only they had recorded this in DSD ...

Classic folk rock album with the blending of other genres.

This is a great album that sports a good but not great recording. The performances are classic as is the album and the entire album is a very good listen from start to finish. The songs are mostly related to old stories and the like with a folksey and old irish/english style of structure. It was recorded in an old cottage I believe which probably explains why its sound is less bloomy that regular recordings.

Sandy Denny has a marvelous, expressive and touching voice and for the most part it is rendered very well here. Thompsons great guitar work is also showcased in good fashion as well. There are times where the drums are not brought out in a particular song.or perhaps the bass is lacking a tad but this was how it was recorded. And other songs seem to be recorded with better definition and clarity. Go figure.

I have to say that Universal Japan has done a more than credible job here and I wont quibbly to much with the quality of this transfer. To be sure some tracks are better sounding than others but thats not to say that this sacd sounds bad in any way. Of all the shm-sacd's I have purchased I would rate it as a little lower than some of the other titles but this is because of how it was originally recorded. One cant expect this to sound as good as lets say Steely Dan's albums.

And lastly...this is a great album featuring terrific and timeless music. Whats not to like.

I would recommend this shm-sacd for its brilliance and originality as a classic album that still resonates to this day.

Highly recommended.

This is my first SHM-SACD (stereo-one layer) that I bought. I have compared it to my normal CD of Liege & Lief by Fairport. For my ears some of the "dullness" of the CD was gone; overall the separation and the clearness of the instruments was better and Sandy was positioned exactly in the middle. Also more little details were heard. The DSD transfer was acceptable, but I have one grief: on my copy is on track 4 a "scratch" (as on an old vinyl record) at about 2.04. This shouldn't be for a SACD this expensive.
